David William Kelmel, 64, of Morrisonville, IL, passed away at 10:48 p.m. on Sunday, October 28, 2018 at his residence.

David was born June 13, 1954 in Taylorville, IL, the son of Harold W. “Shorty” and Frances (Oakley) Kelmel.  He married Donna Durbin on August 26, 2006 at St. Maurice Catholic Church in Morrisonville, IL.

David graduated from Morrisonville High School in 1973, and attended Lincoln Land Community College to study automotive mechanics.  He was an excellent mechanic, becoming ASE Certified, and it would be hard to imagine the number of cars in the community he has repaired for people in need just for a thank you.  He has been employed by Landmark in Taylorville since 1983.  Not only was David family first, but he was also dedicated to his community.  He has been a member and past president of the Morrisonville Community Club for 30 years, Village of Morrisonville Trustee for 16 years, past volunteer firefighter for the Morrisonville Fire Department for 20 years, and a member of St. Maurice Catholic Church.  He loved his old cars and working on cars.  David enjoying helping his brother, Phil, farm and staying busy, as well as cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals and Fighting Illini Basketball team.

He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Lawrence Kelmel; sister, Brenda Kelmel; nephew, Philip Schwab; and step-father, Robert Frost.

David is survived by his wife, Donna Kelmel of Morrisonville, IL; sons, Chris (Tina) Kelmel of Arcola, and Derek Kelmel of Morrisonville, IL; step-children, Aaron Durbin and Kristin (Tim) Hunt both of Taylorville, IL; grandchildren, Hailey and Madison Hunt, Ryan (Kesia) Decker, and Laney, Brooklyn, Nolan, Spencer, and Phoenix Kelmel; mother, Frances Frost of Taylorville, IL; siblings, Philip (Susie) Kelmel of Morrisonville, IL, Ann (Bob) Nation of Stonington, IL, Susan (Kevin) Moomey of Morrisonville, IL, James (Sharon) Kelmel of Morrisonville, IL, and Bill (Dwanna) Kelmel of Taylorville, IL; aunt, Ruth Hefley of Hillsboro, IL; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation: The family will receive guests from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at Perfetti-Assalley Funeral Home, 304 Carlin St., Morrisonville, IL 62546.

Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 2, 2018 at Perfetti-Assalley Funeral Home in Morrisonville, with Deacon Patrick O’Toole officiating.

Interment will follow at St. Maurice Catholic Cemetery in Morrisonville, IL.  

Memorial Contributions may be made to: Morrisonville-Palmer Fire Protection District, 205 SE 6th St., Morrisonville, IL 62546, or the Morrisonville-Palmer Food Pantry, 307 SE 6th St., Morrisonville, IL 62546.  Food donations may be brought to the Knights of Columbus Hall #1151 in Morrisonville, IL, on Friday morning.
