Agnes L. Hunter

Agnes L. Hunter, 97, of Taylorville, passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at Taylorville Care Center.

Agnes was born May 24, 1925, in Taylorville, the daughter of Fred and Birdie Ann (Peck) Gelonek.  She married Elwaddell John Hunter on December 24, 1943 at the First Baptist Church in Taylorville.  He preceded her in death on December 11, 2009.

Agnes graduated from Taylorville High School with the Class of 1943, where she was an honor roll student.  She went to work for Consolidated as a telephone operator until her retirement.  In her retirement years, Agnes owned and operated Agnes’ Beauty Shop for several years.  She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Taylorville, and she volunteered for many years as a Girl Scout Leader.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Larry LeRoy Whitehead; brothers, Robert and Jack Gelonek; and sister, JoAnn Hernandez.

Agnes is survived by her daughter, Karyn K. Whitehead of Aviston; granddaughter, Tammy (husband, Zach) Biggs of Aviston; sister, Mary Hamel of Taylorville; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation & Funeral Ceremony: The family will receive guests from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at Shafer-Perfetti & Assalley Funeral Home, 202 W. Franklin Street, Taylorville, IL 62568.  The funeral ceremony will follow the visitation at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Brennan Hurley officiating.

Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville.
