August Edward Mantell

August Edward "Gus" Mantell, 76 of Springfield formerly of Hewittville passed away Friday, March 9, 2012 at 5:17 AM at his residence.

He was born October 14, 1935 at Taylorville the son of August and Beulah (Rusher) Mantell. He married kathleen A. Davis at Taylorville. He was preceded in death by his father, brother and sister-in-law, George and Helen Mantell, sister, Patty Richards.

Gus worked at Peabody Mine #10 and was a member of the Mine Rescue Team, retiring in 1994. He was a member of American Legion Post 73 where he served as a past Commander, Eagles Club 1425, Moose Lodge 1516. He was a veteran of the Army serving with the 82nd Airborne, 504 Regiment.

Survivors: Wife, Kathleen Mantell of Springfield, IL; Son, August "Van" (Ellen) Mantell of Winston-Salem, NC; Daughters, Brandi (Clint) Mantell-Porter of Taylorville, IL, Wendy Coley of Lexington, NC and Lacy Mantell of Springfield, IL; 9 Grandchildren; 3 Great Grandchildren; Mother, Beulah Richards of Taylorville, IL; Sisters, Linda Richards of Taylorville, IL and Judy Richards of Millersville, MD; Several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 14 at 2:00 PM at Shafer-Perfetti Funeral Home with Rev. Joann Dobyns officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Taylorville. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
