Charles Pelham Owens, 84, of Greenville, IL, passed away Tuesday, October 19, 2021, surrounded by his family at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. 

Charles was the son of Jasper and Ella Irene (Dewitt) Owens. He was born August 11, 1937, in Havana, AR.  Charles joined the United States Air Force July 17, 1957, and was stationed at Larson Air Force Base in Washington, where he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. 

He married Myrtle Dee Owens (Bell) October 14, 1966, in East St. Louis, IL.  They moved to O’Fallon, IL where they resided for many years before they fulfilled their dream of living in the country in Greenville, IL.  Charles was an over-the-road truck driver who travelled hundreds of thousands of miles over 50 years.  He loved his family with his entire heart and soul and wasn’t shy about telling anyone how proud he was of them.  He never knew a stranger and could talk for hours to anyone. 

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four sisters and two brothers.

Charles is survived by a daughter, Rita Carlile of Greenville, IL; five grandchildren, Deanne Dowdy (Kenneth), Peggy Bielong (Brian), Vicki Casey (Allan), Alex Carlile, and Iziah Carlile; five great grandchildren, Allison, Kenneth Jr, Kaitlyn, Timmy, and Carter; a sister Reba Johnson (Donnie); two additional children, Sharon Knipe and Carol Melton; two additional grandchildren, Ryan and Shelley; and special friend Darla Petchulat.

Visitation will be at 11:00AM on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at Assalley-Young Funeral Home, Greenville, IL.  The funeral service will begin at 12:00PM, officiated by Patrick Bland.  Burial to follow at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, in Greenville, IL.

He my dads uncle my dad name is Clayton Adrian emberson I remember Charles came out here 3or4timescaiforna 3or4 times in the truck he stady two day untill he got a nother loud back home that was the beast time he let us play in the truck I will miss him badly Always love uncle Charles my condolences to the rest of the family

  2. We enjoyed every minute of Charlie’s company and are grateful for the time he and my mother, Darla, shared together, the sound of his infectious laugh, and seeing he and my Mom holding hands on our front porch swing.

  3. Thank you for sharing your memory with us. He truly was a person who loved visiting his extended family. I truly think that is why he enjoyed over the road driving because it gave him more opportunities to see people he may not normally see. It will be one week tomorrow and I can’t tell you how many times we have said we will call grandpa and ask him. That is the hardest part, knowing we will not ever be able to do that anymore.
