Born in: Springfield, Illinois
Resided in: Morrisonville, Illinois

Donald Lee Rathgeber, 92, of Morrisonville, passed away on Monday, October 7, 2024, at Taylorville Memorial Hospital.

Don was born on January 8, 1932, in Springfield, Illinois, to Alberta and William Rathgeber. He married Donna Dunbar on June 10, 1956, and she survives. Together they have three children, Lynn, Darcy and Daniel, who preceded him in death.

A longtime local boy, he began working during high school at Lowe’s Hardware store. After graduating from Morrisonville High School, Don started his professional banking career working for the Morrisonville Bank. He then went on to work for Palmer State Bank, and then moved to Vice President of First National Bank of Taylorville. Don was a very active member of his community. He enjoyed his long tenure as a board member of Christian County Crime Stoppers and spent time as the secretary for the Morrisonville Community Club. Don was a caring and considerate man who would do anything for anyone.

In his off time, he helped teach ballroom dancing alongside his lovely wife, Donna; he enjoyed traveling the United States, having visited 48 out of the 50 states, as well as Canada and Mexico. He loved the experiences and beauty that their travels had to offer but what he really enjoyed the most was sharing those experiences with his family and grandkids. When he wasn’t traveling, he made sure that he was a presence at his great grandkids sporting events, camping, and was fond of watching the Model T Antique Hill Climb. Don also liked to hit the town and enjoy a cup of coffee with many of his friends, especially Ronny Lowe of Lowe’s Hardware.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Donna; children, son, Lynn Rathgeber and daughter, Darcy (Mike) Montgomery; granddaughter, Noel (Joel) Ernst; grandson, Nathan (Mackenzie) Montgomery; four wonderful great-grandkids, Jax, Reece, Owen, and Kade; sister, Maxine Smith; several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents, William & Alberta; son, Daniel Rathgeber; brother, Melvin Rathgeber; brother-in-law, C.P. Smith.
