September 15, 1927 ~ April 21, 2022

Born in: East St. Louis, IL
Resided in: Mulberry Grove, IL

Dorcas D. Jahn, age 94, of Mulberry Grove, Illinois, died Thursday, April 21, 2022, at her home. Dorcas was born September 15, 1927, in East St Louis, Illinois. She was the fourth of six children born to John and Lennie Lee Beaver Perotka who preceded her in death.

Dorcas was married to Elmer Jahn in 1949. He preceded her in death. She was married to Manford Bray in 1971, who also preceded her in death.

A sister, Lee Russell, and brothers, Clell, Wayne, and Zack Perotka preceded her in death.

Dorcas is survived by a sister, Joyce Stough of Webster City, Iowa, and her seven children: Rev. Jeffrey (Cathy) Jahn of Marion, Indiana; Iris (Rev. Dennis) Price of Rockbridge, Illinois; Robbin (Agnes) Jahn of Clayhatchee, Alabama; Julie (Larry) Ford of Lebanon, Illinois, Lennie Jahn of Shobonier, Illinois; Christopher (Tina) Jahn of Centralia, Illinois; and Cara (Greg) Geers of Carrollton, Illinois.

She is also survived by 29 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Dorcas grew up in Caseyville, Illinois, graduated from high school in 1945, then attained a degree from the Kellberg Institute, College of Massage and Physical Therapy in Chicago.

She was essentially a homemaker, and in later years she earned a living by being an excellent caregiver to several people in the area.

Her Christian faith was lived out through Bible studies, Sunday School classes, missionary support, prayer and worship at the Mulberry Grove United Methodist Church and other places.

Dorcas was known for her baking skills: bread (“butter buns”—named by her grandchildren), cookies, pies, and cakes which she shared with her family, church family, neighbors, and friends.

In addition to baking and in keeping with her Biblical namesake, Dorcas had a fervent talent for sewing and quilting, lovingly evidenced in the many blankets she made for family, friends, and missions.

She was also known simply as “Granny.” Even the Post Office would deliver letters to her addressed “Granny, Mulberry Grove, IL 62262.”

In lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts, the family suggests a memorial donation, which will be divided equally among missions/ministries of three of her grandchildren: Harvest Ministry Teams, Wycliffe Associates, and Steiger International. Make checks payable to Iris Price, Co-Executor.

Guestbook

  1. Sorry to see the notice of your Mother’s passing. I’m sure she had a full productive life caring for her family and friends. I did not know her personally, however back in the late ’30’s I knew a Dorcas from the Mulberry Grove area when we attended Camp Meeting at Durley, I’m not sure if was her but I remember the name Dorcas from the Bible story. Also, our birth dates are six days apart, mine is Sep 9 1927. Thank you for your service in our Worship programs.

    • Then you so much, Mr. Knight. You are so kind to remember her that way. She did take us to camp meetings often.
