Earl Samuel Dixon, 99, of Morrisonville, IL, passed away at his home, on March 19, 2024.

Earl was born on January 27, 1925, in Benton, IL, the son of Commie and Mae (Overturf) Dixon.

He married Norma Stringer on March 15, 1948, in Pana, IL and were married for over 72 years before she preceded him in death on March 27, 2020.

As a young child Earl’s family lived in various locations, but when he was grown, he settled in Morrisonville and lived most of his adult life there. He was a strong believer in God, a member of the First Baptist Church in Morrisonville, and a faithful usher for the church for many years and when he wasn’t healthy enough leave the house, he enjoyed watching Jimmy Swaggart on television.

He was a coal miner by trade, he worked for the Peabody Coal Company #10, District 12, Local 9819, for 41 years. He liked to share the gospel and his fellow coalminers nicknamed him ‘Preacher.’

He rode and collected motorcycles, one of his favorites being his Indian, he was quite the daredevil as people would often see him riding down the main drag standing on his motorcycle seat with his arms stretched out wide. He owned and flew a double winged airplane, raced twin engine go-carts, and enjoyed the peacefulness of camping.

Surviving Earl are his sons, David Dixon of Dallas, Texas and Rick Dixon of Morrisonville, Illinois; grandchildren, Amber and Rachel; 5 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild.

Earl is preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant child, daughter, Linda Traylor, and siblings, John, Colleen, Marie, and Juanita.

Visitation: 11:00 – 12:00 am., Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at the Perfetti-Assalley Funeral Home, 304 Carlin St., Morrisonville, IL 62546.

Funeral: 12:00 pm., Tuesday, March 26, 2024, following the visitation, with Rev. Chad Foster, officiating.

Burial: will follow the funeral, in Morrisonville City Cemetery.

The family suggest memorials to be made to the First Baptist Church, in lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts.

Memorials may be given at the visitation and funeral, or mailed to the First Baptist Church, 209 Church St., Morrisonville, IL 62546.

The family has entrusted Assalley Funeral Home with the ceremonies.

  1. David and Rickie, my prayers are with you at this time. Sorry that I can’t be there for visitation and service. Seeing Earl and Norma in their regular pew at church every Sunday was a real blessing to me. I know now what it is like not to be in church just as I am sure both of them felt when they were not able to attend.. My thoughts and prayers will be with you tomorrow. Have a safe trip as you head back to Texas, David.
