Evelyn Mae Cook, a beloved resident of Sorento, Illinois, passed away peacefully at her residence on November 17, 2024, at the age of 91. Born September 18, 1933, in Springfield, Illinois, to Thomas Floyd and Edna Mae (Robertson) Cook, Evelyn spent her life surrounded by family, friends, and the communities that she loved. Her unwavering faith and childlike innocence were a guiding light to those who knew her.

Aunt Ebby was a special lady in every sense of the word. She was a proud participant in the Special Olympics as a swimmer, showing courage and a competitive spirit that inspired many. Her love for Mickey Mouse and Disney brought her great joy. One of her fondest memories was a visit to Disney World in Orlando, where she was able to fish from a drift boat. Fishing was a favorite pastime, and her most-liked spots included Shoals Creek and Patriots Park. Whether she was out by the water or on an adventure with her buddy, Aunt Ebby was always up for a good time.

She was a dedicated employee at FAYCO, showing up every day with a smile and a positive attitude. Her work ethic and happy spirit left a lasting impact on everyone around her. Evelyn found joy in the simple things—putting together puzzles, watching animals on TV, and enjoying delicious meals, especially when it was Pumpkin’s cooking. Though she didn’t talk much, Aunt Ebby expressed her love and joy in countless ways. Her hugs were legendary—full of warmth and affection that conveyed everything words could not. She had an adventurous spirit, a fearless outlook on life, and an unconditional love for her family. She delighted in family reunions, the company of loved ones, and the wonders of nature. She enjoyed looking at illustrations in books, often pretending to read them, her eyes lighting up with
curiosity and delight.

Preceding Evelyn in death are her parents, Thomas & Eden, and all of her brothers and sisters.

Evelyn is survived by her niece Carlene (George) Day of Sorento, as well as many more nieces, nephews, and cousins, who will forever remember her big heart, her smile, and the love she shared so generously. She touched many lives and leaves behind a legacy of happiness, love, and adventure.

  1. Light a CandleYou will always be in our hearts and minds. Remembering one of my first drives after getting my car was to take you to the Dr and for ice cream. I have missed putting puzzles together with you. I hope all your brothers and sisters are there to greet you. Make sure to watch over your brother Harold until he is ready to join you.
