Born in: Mt. Auburn, Illinois
Resided in: Taylorville, Illinois

On Saturday, January 27, 2024, Grace E. Greffe, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away at the age of 96. She joined her husband, Donald Greffe, who predeceased her in 2016. They had been married for 69 years. Grace is survived by one daughter, Annette (Ron) Spears, one grandson, Donald (Nicole) Spears, great granddaughters, Meredith and Chloe, sister, Anna Lou Yoho, brother, Leroy Heberling, and sisterinlaw, Rachel Wheeler. Grace was one of six children born to Henry Curtis and Alberta Heberling. Siblings that predeceased her: Nell Eastley, and Jordan & Edward Heberling

Grace was proud to have graduated from THS in 1944, the year that the men’s Taylorville Tornado basketball team won every game on their way to the State Basketball Championship. Grace learned the value of hard work at an early age and was a dedicated employee at the Consolidated Telephone Company, Farmer’s Coop in Willey Station, and the Christian County YMCA. She was a bookkeeper and would not rest until every book was perfectly balanced

Grace’s life revolved around her faith, family, and farming. Soon after marrying Don in 1947, she asked to be baptized and joined the Bethel Baptist Church where she was an active member for 76 years. Don was a member there for 96 years. Grace served in several positions including Sunday School Teacher and church treasurer. She was always thinking about her family and how she could sacrificially help them in any way. Reunions with extended families were important events every summer. Working full time, Grace still kept an amazing home, was always there for her daughter and family, and supported Don in their farming operation and his career in the Army National Guard (even though the cows always got out when he left for training camps!

Grace was a fabulous cook. If you ever stopped by the house, a tray of goodies and a pot of coffee would soon appear. She was well known for her divinity, but no one could bake cookies, pies, and breads like her. Holiday dinners were a sight to behold. Grace loved to prepare and take full meals to family and friends unexpectedly. Imagine finding a home cooked meal waiting for you after a hard day’s work. Along with Don, Grace always had a huge garden, and they would provide fresh vegetables to family and friends. They canned large quantities of veggies and fruits to enjoy throughout the year. Grace loved to walk for miles even before walking became popular. She enjoyed attending theatre in Sullivan, working challenging jigsaw puzzles, and just being at her family’s many activities. It was a simple and long life, welllived. Well done, thou good and faithful servant.Matthew 25:21

Grace was laid to rest on Tuesday, January 30th in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. Her life will be celebrated during the worship service at the Bethel Baptist Church on February 25th. The service will begin at 10:30 A.M., and the doors will open at 9:30. All family and friends are invited to attend, and a meal for all will be served after the service. Memorials may be given to the Bethel Baptist Church in memory of Grace. The address of the church is 1919 N 1000 East Rd in Taylorville
