John Dennis ‘Jack’ Spratt, a beloved husband, father, grandpa, great grandpa, and proud patriot, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland, Illinois. Jack was 86 years old. Born in Vandalia, Illinois, to Verne Edison Spratt and Lucille Gertrude Mahon, he grew up in Bond County, where he built a life marked by dedication, service, and love.
He graduated from Greenville High School with the Class of 1956 and attended Greenville College for a couple of years before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1960. During his naval service, Jack served honorably during the Cuban Missile Crisis, embodying the steadfast courage and commitment that defined his life. After his discharge from the Navy, Jack returned to Greenville, where he met and married the love of his life, Barbara Alton. Together, they raised three children and shared 53 wonderful years of marriage before her passing on December 10, 2017.
Jack began his career at Pet Milk, where he worked after returning from his military service. He later joined the postal service for five years before embarking on a career at the Coffeen Coal Mine, where he worked until 1982. Afterward, he returned to the postal service and remained there until his retirement in 1999.
A true patriot, Jack was a lifelong member of Greenville VFW Post 1377 and AMVETS Post 140. He was also a proud member of the New Douglas Masonic Lodge 0560 and the Bond County chapter of the Ainad Shriners. He found joy in simple pleasures, such as solving puzzles, cheering on his beloved St. Louis Cardinals, and listening religiously to the Hayride on WGEL. His presence brought warmth and laughter to those who knew him, and his unwavering commitment to his family, community, and country will always be remembered.
Jack is survived by his children: Jackie (Ricky) Scott of Carlyle, Illinois, William (Becky) Spratt of Mulberry Grove, Illinois and Angie (Rusty) Scoggins of Mulberry Grove, Illinois, 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, his parents, Verne and Lucille and a grandchild in infancy.
