Joseph G. David, 77, of Sharpsburg, IL, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 8:13 a.m. at his residence surrounded by family.

Joseph was born December 14, 1947, in Springfield, IL, the son of Joseph P. and Louise (Blanche) David.  He married Nancy Vice on June 12, 1971, at Farmington Presbyterian Church.  She preceded him in death on November 23, 2015.

Surviving is his daughter, Carol “Sue” Smith; his grandchild, Tyler Joseph Smith; his great-grandchildren, Dawson, Easton, and Madeline Smith; his siblings, Suzanne Fowler and Donna Durham Chase; brothers-in-law, Larry Vice and John “Mike” (Sara) Vice; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and his faithful beloved service dog, Mister Luke.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife.

His Niece, Amy Cook, was his closest friend and main caregiver for the past four years. She took great care of him and loved him like a second father.

Joseph graduated from Feitshans High School in Springfield, class of 1965.  After high school, he was drafted in the Army in 1968.  He served two years in Vietnam.  He also served in the Illinois Air National Guard for 27 years in Springfield, retiring in 2000.  He participated in the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight in 2016.  He was a chef/baker for Taylorville Country Club, County Market and Kroger all in Taylorville, and finally retired from Springfield Memorial Hospital in the cafeteria.  His hobbies included coloring and fishing for whatever he could get his hook on.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to the two caregivers from Addus and the staff at Elara Caring for their care, compassion, and warmth taking care of our loved one.

The family will receive family and friends at Shafer-Perfetti & Assalley Funeral Home in Taylorville, IL on Saturday, March 8, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  A funeral service will be held immediately following the visitation.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.  The family has asked everyone to please wear casual attire.  Shafer-Perfetti & Assalley Funeral Home in Taylorville is assisting the family with arrangements.
