Julia Craig, a loving and caring soul, was born on February 29, 1940, in Macon, Mississippi, to Theola and Ora Lee Brackett. On March 9, 2024, Julia departed this world, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of kindness. Julia is survived by siblings, Theola Brackett (spouse Patty), L.C. Brackett (spouse Rosella), Susie Brackett, Mary Ellington (spouse James) and Roberta Stapleton (spouse David). Children; Jesse Craig Jr., Michael Craig, Anthony Craig, Jason Craig, Diane Ojarigi, Barbara Howze, Mary Craig, Patricia Craig.
Grandchildren; Dewayne Naudain, April Naudain, Mohammed Ojarigi, Asamau Ojarigi, Antwione Craig, Markesha Craig, Ora Craig, Jessica Craig, Mark Howze, Quintin Davis, Capria Holiday, Shanice Craig, DeShaun Jackson, Ashley Craig, Keyonna Craig, Davina, Antonia Craig, Marquin Craig, Lashalle Samuels, Tyrelle Anderson, Deja, Isaiah Craig, Michael Meredith Jr., Michael Craig, Alex Craig, Antonio Craig, Anthony Craig Jr., LaTesha Richmond, Marquis Brefford, Ebony Richmond, Reese Richmond, Jayla Craig, and a host of other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and relatives.
Her legacy extends to her precious grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless extended family members whose lives she touched with love, wisdom, and guidance.
Julia is preceded in death by her parents Theola and Ora Lee Brackett; siblings, Viola Harris, Eddie Brackett, Jeanne Bates, and Carolyn Hale; son, David Craig; grandchildren, Phelandis Jackson and Tanika Craig.
Julia’s journey began in Taylorville, IL, where she received her primary education. On September 4, 1958, she entered marriage with Jesse Craig Jr., and together they moved to St. Louis, Missouri, embarking on a shared mission to raise their eight children. The joy of Julia’s life was her children, each a testament to her unwavering love and devotion. Each child brought her immeasurable pride and joy as they grew into the remarkable individuals they are today. Though life presented its challenges, Julia’s resilient spirit led her to Springfield, IL, where she courageously embraced a fresh start after parting ways with Jesse.
In Springfield, fate introduced her to Tommy Logan, and from this connection, Julia’s miracle child, Jason Craig, was brought into the world, a testament to the enduring strength that she embodied. Throughout her career in the hospitality industry, Julia touched the lives of many with her warmth and compassion, earning the admiration of colleagues and patrons alike.
Retirement granted Julia the precious gift of time, which she devoted to nurturing her ever-growing family. Whether surrounded by her children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren, Julia found fulfillment in their presence, cherishing each moment spent together. Her unwavering love, gentle spirit, and selfless nature made her an angel on earth, as she tirelessly sought to uplift and assist everyone she encountered.
Among her favorite pastimes, the soulful melodies of Luther Vandross held a special place in Julia’s heart, offering solace and joy in the embrace of his music. Her absence leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of those she touched, yet her legacy of compassion and generosity will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Julia Craig’s enduring love and light will be profoundly missed by her family, friends, and all who were privileged to experience her boundless warmth and generosity. In her passing, we find solace in the countless memories she gifted us and vow to carry forth her legacy of love and support.
Rest in peace, dear Julia. Your spirit will live on in the hearts of those you’ve forever touched.
A celebration of Julia’s life will take place on April 6, 2024, at 10:00 AM (Visitation) and 11:00 (Funeral Service) at Miracle Temple Church of God, 1201 S Pope Avenue, Springfield, IL 62703, with Rev. Wendell Day, Jr., officiating. The interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville, IL.
In honor of her remarkable spirit, the family requests that those attending wear her favorite color, which was blue, as a symbol of the joy and vibrancy she brought to the lives of all who knew her.
In memory of Julia, memorials may be gifted to the Miracle Temple Church of God in Christ, 1201 South Pope Avenue, Springfield, IL 62703, in lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts.
The family has entrusted Shafer-Perfetti- Assalley Funeral Home with the ceremonies.
