Kathryn Clara Barkema Zimmerman, 96 of Harvel, late of Lynchburg, VA died at the Guggenheimer Nursing Home in Lynchburg on Wednesday, March 1.

She was born December 17, 1903 in Jewel, Iowa, the daughter of Timothy G. and Katrina Caroline (Wessels) Barkema. On August 14, 1929 in The Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa, she was married to William Keiser Zimmerman, who preceded her in death on November 3, 1984.

Mrs. Zimmerman taught in the rural schools of Hamilton County, Iowa and graduated from Iowa State in 1929 with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics Education. After her children were grown, she enjoyed substitute teaching in the area schools. She was a member of the Harvel Christian Church and CWF, a Charter member of the Montgomery County Home Extension, the Iowa State University Alumni Association and a member of the Thursday Afternoon Club. She was active in the work of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at both the district and state level.

She is survived by two sons: Donald D (Martha) of Harvel and Roger William (Mary) of Lynchburg, VA: five grandchildren; John William Zimmerman of New York City, Christopher Keiser Zimmerman (Christina) of Harvel, IL, Mark M Zimmerman (Robin) of Yulee, FL, Kathryn Zimmerman of New York City, and Mary Elizabeth (John) Whittle of Louisville, KY and one great granddaughter, Meghan Elizabeth Zimmerman of Yulee, FL. A nephew, George Barkema of Aurora, CO was reared in the Zimmerman home. Also surviving are two sisters: Mae Busick of Webster City, IA and Geneva Lockhart of Dayton, IA. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Faith Marie who died in infancy, three brothers: Hans George, Peter Frederick and Willis Timothy; and three sisters: Anna Margaret Johnson, Rickie Caroline Olson, and Dorothy Bertha Johnson.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Harvel Christian Church with Rev. James D. W. Borop officiating. Burial will be in the Harvel Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 on Friday at the Moffitt Funeral Home in Morrisonville.
