Michael Kerns

PALMER - Michael James "Mike" Kerns, 52, of Palmer passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at 5:15 a.m. at Taylorville Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 3, 1957, in Taylorville, the son of Roy and Roberta (Dasher) Kerns. He married Martha "Marty" Stanley on April 5, 1980, at Palmer Advent Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mike was a control room operator for Dominion Power Plant in Kincaid. He was active in Boy Scouts of America and associated with scouting for 41 years. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout, along with being the past leader of both Cub Scout Troop 74 and Boy Scout Troop 74. Both of Mike's parents, and his family, were very active in scouting for many years, with both of his children received the highest honors with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows, Fire Crafters, and committee chair of Venturing Crew 7468. Mike attended Evangelical Free Church in Taylorville.

He is survived by his wife, Martha "Marty" Kerns of Palmer; daughter, Michelle Kerns of Palmer; son, Matthew (wife, Elizabeth) Kerns of Chatham; grandchildren, Caden and Grant; brother, Richard (wife, Carla) Kerns of Taylorville; sister, Doris (husband, Randy) Green of Taylorville; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Perfetti Funeral Home in Morrisonville. Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Jim Wolfe and Pastor Don Beetem officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Morrisonville Troop 74.
