Velma Kitchell Wilson, 97, of Sarasota, FL, formerly of Urbana, and a native of Morrisonville, died July 28, 2000 in Sarasota.

Mrs. Wilson was born February 26, 1903 in Morrisonville, the daughter of Arthur and Lucy Kitchell. She married Alex Wilson of Urbana in 1936. He died in 1985.

She attended Morrisonville public schools and MacMurray College, Jacksonville. She received her master’s degree in music education from the University of Illinois and taught in the Mount Carmel public schools. In 1928 she began teaching music at the University of Illinois and at University High School, where she was the director of the women’s chorus.

In 1941 she became a fulltime faculty member at the University  of Illinois School of Music and later was named chairman of the  Music Education Division. Mrs. Wilson was also the organist for First United Methodist and Grace United Methodist churches in Urbana for many years. She was also active in Sigma Alpha Iota  professional music fraternity.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, October 29, 2000 at 3:00 PM in Morrisonville Cemetery, Rev, David Glahn officiating.

Memorials may be given to Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, 7950 Tamiami Trail South, Sarasota, FL 34231 or the Kitchell Memorial Library in Morrisonville.

Moffitt Funeral Home in Morrisonville is in charge of arrangements.
