June 6, 1958 ~ September 4, 2026

Born in: Granite City, IL
Resided in: Greenville, IL

Virgil Eugene Bowden, age 68, of Greenville, Illinois, passed away Friday, September 4, 2026, at his residence.

He was born Friday, June 6, 1958, in Granite City, Illinois, a son of the late Virgil Bowden, Sr. and Ruby (Duckworth) Bowden. He was raised on a farm North of Woburn. He graduated from Mulberry Grove High School in 1976. He moved to Greenville with his wife, Diane, where they put down roots and started a family. They built their dream home, and Virgil took great pride in maintaining it just the way he liked it.

Virgil will be remembered for his love for his family and the simple things that brought him happiness. He was a man who knew what he liked and held a few things close to his heart: his family, the St. Louis Cardinals and Blues, and Allis-Chalmers tractors. His love for the Cardinals, the Blues, and AC Tractors was simply part of who he was, and those who knew him will think of him whenever they see a ballgame, hear the roar of a hockey crowd, or spot that familiar AC Orange.

Surviving Virgil are his wife of 38 years, Diane Bowden; his daughter Katie (Colton) Evans, and granddaughter, Sawyer.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Ruby (Duckworth) Bowden, and grandparents, Hubert and Helen (Royer) Duckworth.

  1. My childhood friend. Went all 12 grades with Virgil. No nicer person. Funny, kind and a beautiful soul. Fly high my friend

  2. Light a CandleDiane and Family
Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to you and your family at this sad time. May the Heavenly Father comfort and keep you warm in his loving arms until you are with Virgil again. Though we hadn’t seen Virgil in years, we have many fond memories of Virgil, Ruby and their dog Bouncer. Virgil took good care of both of them and his Grandfather Duckworth at the time. Our twin girls were very tiny night owls. They would often go to their window and call for Burgil and Bouncer until they came over and said hi. I think Burgil finally said, “OK, I’ll say hi, but then you have to go back to bed!” Such a sweet guy. Rest now until you see your family again.

  3. Bowden family, our sincere sympathy on the passing of Virgil. He and Ruby were our neighbors up the street years ago. They were both sweethearts. They walked their little dog up and down our street and would always visit with us. Remember Virgil working at Schmitt Motors and what a pleasant kid he was there. God bless your family.
