Walter E. Cummings

Walter E. Cummings, 93, of Taylorville, passed away at 1:50 a.m. on Monday, June 26, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.

Walter was born August 3, 1923 in Kincaid, IL, the son of Edward and Mary (Fines) Cummings. He married Mary Sophia Boswell on July 30, 1955 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Springfield. She preceded him in death on October 24, 1996.

Walter proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II, where he spent a considerable amount of time in England. He would go on to work for Paul Tick Liquor Distribution, and eventually retire after over thirty years of service. Walter was a life member of the VFW Post 4495 in Taylorville, as well as a member of the American Legion in Kincaid, IL. He was an avid golfer, making three holes-in-one. Walter was an animal lover, and avid Cubs fan.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Cummings; and sisters, Dorothy Polic and Eileen Wittka.

Walter is survived by his nieces and nephews, Richard (Lea) Polic of O'Fallon, IL, Debbie (Raj) Mehra of Springfield, IL, Joann (Michael) Williams of Centralia, IL, Kris (Kevin) Tipsword of Sorento, IL, Fred (Lynn) Wilton of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Donna (Fred) Campogni of Taylorville, IL; and several great nieces and great nephews.

Visitation & Funeral Ceremony: The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of ceremony at 12:00 p.m., on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at Shafer-Perfetti & Assalley Funeral Home, 202 W. Franklin St., Taylorville, IL 62568, with Rev. Msgr. David S. Lantz, officiant.

Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, IL, where military honors will be provided.
