Wilma Ruth Vicena, 97, formerly of Panama, passed away on August 7, 2022, at St. Annes Hospital in Seattle, Washington.

Wilma was born on September 24, 1924, in Polk City, IA, the daughter of Elizabeth and Harold Waldo. She graduated from Polk City High School in 1941. Wilma married Steve Vicena in July of 1946, and after a time living in Chicago, they moved to Panama in July of 1949. They had many great years together.

Wilma lived in her beloved home in Panama for 65 years, and she was a devoted member of the Panama Methodist Church. Everyone in the community knew Wilma as a kind and generous person who was always willing to lend a helping hand. In 2015 she moved to Vashon Island, WA, to live with her daughter Sherri and her husband Matt. Wilma spent her days watching the birds, admiring the flowers in the garden, embroidering, reading hundreds of books on her well-loved Kindle, and she especially enjoyed her tea and cookies every day at 4 o’clock sharp.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Steve Vicena; and her daughter, Lynnette Stewart.

Wilma is survived by her daughter, Sherri (Matt) Mask; her son-in-law, Dave Stewart; and her grandchildren, Scott (Angie) Stewart, Meghan Stewart, Erin (Erik) Hahn, Hunter Mask, and Jack Mask.

Guestbook

  1. Wilma was a wonderful Sunday school teacher at the Methodist Church in Panama. She always brought candy for us for after Sunday school. She was always kind. May you rest in peace now.

  2. Wilma was a much loved fixture of Panama and the church. Always smiling and kind to everyone. She is missed.

  3. I am always interested in those from Panama. My Grandmother was Lena Bennett who cooked at the school for many years. My Mom was Agnes Bennett Leible. I have heard many stories from the good old days. My Grandfather was D.R. Bennett who was Postmaster for years during the Depression. I am George David Leible 87 years old living in Hillsboro, Illinois.

  4. Wilma always had a smile for you. She was the sweetest lady I ever met. She was always kindest person. I have thought of Wilma and Steve a lot over the years. She will be missed. Prayers and hugs to Wilma’s family and friends.

  5. I spent many summer afternoons at Wilma’s house during our (Sherri and I) high school years. Always a fun, kind woman.

  6. Sherri, my deepest sympathy and love to you and your family on the loss of your mother. She was one of the sweetest, kindest, loveliest people I have ever met. She always had a smile. My girls and I have many good memories of both of your sweet parents.
