Verlin Meskil, most dearly loved husband, father, brother, uncle, grand and great-grandfather, as well as friend to so many passed on August 30, 2024, at the age of 85 less than a month from his 86th birthday.
Verlin was born on September 23, 1938, to William and Irene (Voudrie) Meskil and loved to tell the story he was told of arriving home where his brother, Bill, came out and swept him up to carry him in. The two shared a special bond with many adventures and phone calls every night until Bill preceded him in 2001.
Verlin was the second youngest of thirteen children and was beloved by all. Surviving is his brother, Harold (Marilyn) Meskil of Pierron and sister, Joyce (Larry) Quigley of Beaver Creek. Through the marriage of his brother Harold to Marilyn, he was introduced to her sister, Karen Schultz. The two fell in love and Verlin proposed by asking her to open the glove compartment where she found the ring.
On May 13, 1961, they married and one year later became a family of three with the arrival of their first daughter, Donna. Twin boys, Bruce and Brian, were born to the couple in 1964 but passed at 3 days and 1 day old. Moving on from that tremendous loss, the couple later had a son, Glenn, and another daughter, Cathy, who all, along with their mother, will miss their father tremendously every day.
Verlin was given the nickname of Pap by his first grandchild, a granddaughter, Krystle, who proceeded him in 2020 at the age of 39. He was so very loved by her and all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren to follow. He will forever be treasured by grandchildren Kory (Casey) Meskil, Bruce, Brian, and Brad (Sierra) Meskil, and Elle Jae and Anniston Deiters. Also blessed to love and be loved by their great grandpa are Dylan, Macie, Parker, Gracelyn, Bryson, Fallyn, and Cassidy.
Before becoming Pap, Verlin was called Mus (short for Muscles) as he was known for being strong and a hard worker. He was respected by everyone that he worked for and with, while building lifelong friendships along the way. Verlin was skilled and always happiest behind the wheel of various machinery. He spent many years working at the local gravel pits near the family residence in Keyesport. He was truly able to do just about anything and his work ethic and pleasing personality led to other jobs, as well as anyone needing help with anything around town knowing who to call. He was also a requested union driver for road work as Verlin always took care of the equipment and could handle the steering like no other. His children and grandchildren will hold on to memories of sitting on the seat with Dad/Pap letting them drive at very early ages. Verlin had his own bulldozer and enjoyed doing side jobs with it. Farming was something that he engaged in throughout his life from his childhood, field work of his own around the hometown and for his friend, Henry Carter, along Hwy 127, rural Greenville. Loved ones will remember driving by seeing him out in the fields in his most peaceful place, the cab of a tractor or combine and knowing he was happy.
With a private family ceremony, Verlin’s final resting place is near his childhood home at Wisetown Cemetery next to his brother, Bill.
Verlin lived a full life so very well-liked by everyone. He was the kindest man, a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather. What he enjoyed most is conversation and we will all miss his stories, his smile, and his love.
I’m so very sorry for your loss. Sending prayers
You are truly going to be to missed
I miss you so very much Dad and will always love you dearly. You will always be the best Dad ever, and I sure hope I get there with you. I know you will be waiting on me, right beside Krystle. You and I have always been the ones that were not scared, and looking forward to heaven. Fly high my sweet Daddy, I know you are at peace.
